Stav Skole, Lillestrom, Norway
We are a public lower secondary school and we teach the general courses from the Norwegian curriculum. We have students from many nationalities and around 45% of our students have a background other than ethnic Norwegian. Our students have a generally high proficiency in oral English and they all have individual computers on which they do their school work and use in class. We wish to expand our teaching methods to move away from traditional teaching were computers are only used as a substitute for pen and paper and utilize more of the possibilities that lie in computer technology and alternative teaching methods.
Our main motivation is to let students know how other people their own age in different countries in Europe live and how their lives and opportunities resemble and differ from each other. Another motivation is to practice the use of English as a global language in real situations where they can not resort to using their own language for support. It is also in our national curriculum to learn about citizenship and democracy and how to strengthen these skills. We have participated in many Erasmus+ teacher courses and we have many young and relatively new English teachers with knowledge of a variety of teaching methods fitting for the 21st century.
